Rough Knuckle Vintage Leather Luggage

April 25th, 2010

Ladies and Gentlemen allow me to present for your consideration an amazing piece and one of the nicest and best cases I have in my collection

A Vintage 1930’s Suitcase, Striped, Leather Handle in Near Mint Condition!

Stunning

Approximate Measurements:

6.5″ x 12″ x 17″

Muted Lavender Interior

I have collected for nearly 45 years. If you are a collector you know that in the beginning you pick up whatever you find. As your collection grows, your eye and your tastes become refined. I am at a point where only the truly wonderful pieces are special enough to catch my eye. Of those only the near Mint pieces are worthy of a place in my collection. After 45 years of collecting and selling, I can honestly say that my standards are pretty high.

Finding this sweet piece was a surprise for several reasons. First, it belonged young woman in nearby San Francisco, in her late 20’s. That was a surprise because I buy quite a bit from all manner of people and don’t see that many 20 something people with near perfect vintage pieces. Perhaps it is their mobility or that the more trendy accessories seem to attract them. The second surprise lie in the fact that it was near Mint condition.

The young woman explained that it had been her great grandmothers. In fact it was the very suitcase in which her great-great grandmother had brought her great grandmother’s baby things home from the hospital. The loving care and respect this case has had is obvious, it’s condition shows it. The young woman saw my amazement and explained that her job was taking her overseas and she simply could not take it. She said that my email convinced her that the suitcase would find a good home.

I usually just buy what I like, in the case of this amazing and perfectly sweet suitcase, I sought it out. You see I needed a suitcase to use as a companion piece to another piece of woven luggage which I have on auction this week as well. I am one of those A type personalities, who likes symmetry and balance in my vignettes and displays. Nearly half of my house is dedicated to my collection and serves as my store front and display area for my passion — vintage leather luggage. The remarks I usually get is.. “Your house looks like a 1940’s Train Station” and you know that really warms my heart. That was the heyday of the Greatest Generation and the Golden Age of Travel, what is not to like Since my home is my display area, I insist on things being in proper balance. It would bother me to no end otherwise.

Sometime back I found an amazing mint piece, bejeweled with a profusion of gorgeous vintage travel stickers, complete with a canvas overcoat, equally special and covered with travel sticks…I was thrilled! But that only lasted until I realized that I needed to look for something to display with it and the powers that be answered my prayers with this astounding piece!

What I like about it:

Beyond its pristine condition, which for me is a prerequisite, this piece has near perfect symmetry. From the woven exterior,to the 3″ wide stripes on the 12″ width. Stripes defined this type of luggage. This case’s markings are thoughtfully executed in color, and dimension. The color is muted and everything even the shape of the lock set, a rectangle with flared out edges, is exquisitely balanced! The color choice on the leather handle and the edge bindings perfectly coordinates with the lightest color on the woven exterior. The choice of nickel fittings and footings.. everything, even down to the back rear leather reinforcement, is executed with perfection.

This piece obviously is ready to be put on display in a stack, as a side table, to store your cherished items, but It could easily be put back into use and be that special unique and thoughtful vintage piece as a Baby shower display or gift, and to bring the newest member of the family’s belongings home from the hospital again!

With love,

From our home to yours!

Dry DSL – it can save you money!

February 12th, 2010

What is it? This applies only to AT&T customers. If you are like me you have had your DSL, a land line and a cell phone for a few years now. Once I started using my cell phone and DSL I virtually stopped using my land-line. I could chat with people on line, I could use my cell phone and if I really wanted to have the feel of a regular phone in my hand I would just use my MagicJack connection. I was paying over $20 a month for the land line and not using it.

I contacted AT&T several times over the last two years asking if there was a way to cancel my land-line but keep my DSL.The DSL service and the telephone (land-line) service are transmitted on the same set of copper wires. The first few times I was told no, I had to have the land-line if I wanted DSL. So, I dropped the issue and went on paying for both. As the economy continued to shrink I approached them again and this time I got a different response. Yes, I could cancel the land-line and keep the DSL service. The new DSL (same as the old one) is called “Dry DSL” but my DSL cost would go up by $10 from $30 to $40 and my land-line would drop from $20 to $0, resulting in a net savings of $10 per month. It would also take a week to switch over during which I would lose DSL.

After weighing the pros and cons of losing DSL (internet access) for a week and it’s impact on our business, the cost increase for the new “Dry DSL”, the cost savings of canceling the land-line I placed the order to convert to Dry DSL.

If you are an AT&T customer with both a land-line and DSL and want to cancel the land-line ask for a Dry DSL connection.

We are Green-O-Vators and proud of it!

January 25th, 2010

Buy-Fix-Sell Properties has been waving the GREEN banner for over 10 years now. We are Green-O-Vators and proud of it! With every passing day, even and maybe because of the difficult economic situation, going Green is IN! The cold weather brings renewed interest in energy efficiency and energy costs every time we open our PG&E bills. We relish every article written, every dual flush toilet sold, every home owner and investor we work with who is open to listening. Our process is radically different from all other renovators, contractors and construction project managers because we have a mission – to inform, educate and empower property owners on the costs and benefits and of green renovations. We seek to share the information, facts and tools we have to enable our clients to look beyond the bottom line costs to issues of pay back, energy efficiency, energy savings and creating a healthy non-toxic environment.

Insulation, according to Obama it is sexy! Our government is finally advocating for and investing in wind and solar. At all levels of government from local to federal there is a new interest in educating and investing in innovations that make use of renewable energy. As a matter of course we research whether there are local, state and federal rebates and incentives to “greenovate”. Not only is there more interest there is finally pro-active leadership, advocacy and support for building better, more energy efficient and non-toxic homes. We at BFS have and will continue to advocate the benefits of going green in our initial consultation with both homeowners and property owners and we are happy to report that more and more listen, ask questions and get on board in our effort to create non-toxic environments in which their families can live healthy and grow strong.

We have attached this link from the San Jose Mercury News which shows greenovation in a San Jose California residential remodel. BFS will be happy to meet with you to discuss your renovation plans.

Nettalk TK6000 a replacement for Magic Jack?

January 19th, 2010

Today, for the first time, I saw a commercial for a product that promises (after the initial purchase price) to provide free phone service within Canada and the US. Now, I am always looking for ways to cut the company’s and home operating expenses.

About six months ago I decided to replace my traditional land line with MagicJack. My monthly phone bill dropped from $24.00 a month to $20.00 a year. I have been happy with MagicJack for the most part but my one complaint is that it has to be connected to a computer which means if you want to be reachable by phone you have to leave a computer on 24 hours a day or like me power down the network around 1:00am everyday including MagicJack.

With this TK6000 device by NetTalk similar to MagicJack your monthly phone bill can drop substantially. All you need is an internet connection, the TK6000 will convert a traditional phone or fax line – you don’t to leave a computer running. The commercial indicates that for a limited time when you order the NetTalk TK6000 you get unlimited service for a lifetime. That includes:

* FREE Voicemail
* FREE 3-Way Callling
* FREE Directory Assistance
* FREE Local Phone Number
* FREE TK6000 to TK6000 calling
* Competitive International Rates

Now, the purchase price at $100 may seem a little steep but this should be offset by a corresponding drop in your monthly phone bill should you like the product and decide to cancel your land line. The device comes with a 30 day money back guarantee which should give you enough time to test it out.

Going Green without Losing your MIND

January 19th, 2010

First of all going green is a process. It starts with the realization that waste and the use and disposal of chemicals which often contain toxins that stay in the food chain and end up on our dinner plate should be a concern. Our systematic depletion of the world’s resources is happening now and it is not only wrong, the consequences of our lifestyle choices, can be harmful to our health, a threat to the health and well being of this planet and to the future of the next generation. That is a mouthful and it often overwhelms most people who want to do something but don’t know where to start. Help is at hand because –it is the small steps that we can easily take that can and will make all the difference.

If everyone did even the fast easy fixes, in their own homes that we will outline below the earth, the next generation and indeed you and I right now would be able to lessen the impact of global warming measurably and substantially. In our power point presentations inevitably Realtors and our renovation clients will excitedly ask us for quick and easy ways they can go green NOW. Here are three easy and inexpensive things we recommend that people can do to start the process. So, for our Facebook friends here are 3 things you can do RIGHT NOW!

1) Replace your incandescent light bulbs with Compact Florescent Lights (CFL). They keep your house cooler and while they may cost 3 times more are energy efficient, they last as much 10 times longer. So revisit CFL’s, they are not what you remember, they come in shades of light and in many new styles and will satisfy your wallet and aesthetic.
2) Install a Programmable thermostat. It is an easy fix and will allow you to plan and adjust your energy usage. Consider adjusting your thermostat downward and adding a sweater.
3) Install insulation. Your ability to keep your home comfortably warm without breaking the bank is not only a function of your furnace or thermostat; it is the ability of your home to retain the heat that you pay for. Penny for penny, no other home improvement yields this kind of pay back. Contact PG&E or your local utility company and see if they offer a home energy Audit, make a list and tackle it one item at a time.

BFS excels in the art and science of ecologically sound and non toxic renovations. We can tailor our services for the investor and/or homeowner and are available to meet with you to review your goals and help you attain them. Going green is a process, calling BFS to handle your renovation is a solid start. We wish you all a safe and prosperous year ahead.

The ABC’s of Zero or NO VOC Paint

January 12th, 2010

The natural thing to do is paint the room pink or blue in expectation of the arrival of a new addition to the family and we at Buy-Fix-Sell Properties are in the business of renovations, so we understand that it is easy to get bogged down with the color and neglect to understand the ramifications of using off the shelf paints. I just saw that my nephew has posted his soon to be born baby girl’s sonogram as his Face book picture and it reminded me that I have to tell him and all of you who may be reading this blog that if any of your preparations include painting a room for that new addition to the family only use Zero VOC paint.

Doug and I are in the niche business of safe, non-toxic, sustainable and green renovation, so we are going to take every opportunity to spread the word on NO Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) paints. If this is a new term to you please follow this link and read further, http://www.eartheasy.com/live_nontoxic_paints.htm. These paints have been available for years but are now, at a price point that at or near off the shelf paints.

For those of you who are parents, friends of expectant parents or grandparents, oh heck, anyone who breathes air period…and that should about cover everyone, please, please, please do your homework on paints used in the home, especially in a child’s room. Most people are shocked that the air quality in their home can be 2-5 times more toxic than the air quality outside of their homes. This is because “that wonderful new house smell, so touted and …” by Realtors is the smell of the new carpet leaching formaldehyde, paints leaching VOCs into the air… you get my point. This is your health and your life and that of your children and if you are wondering why the big box stores are advertising “Zero or NO VOC” paints ask! Get the information and do your homework and if you have the paint tinted make sure that the zero VOC rating includes the tint.

Star Trek Lives and can be found at the Tech Museum in downtown San Jose CA.

January 9th, 2010

The Tech Museum of Innovation is hosting a 15,000 square foot exhibition of 40 years of “Star Trek” including eleven movies and five television series and other related artifacts. In addition on select days you can also watch the 2009 release of Star Trek in the attached IMAX theater. I saw this file last year in a Las Vegas movie theater and it was fantastic! I enjoyed the movie so much that I wanted to see it again but this time it was at home on my ten year old big screen TV…not so good. In my opinion this is a movie best viewed on the largest screen you can find and you can’t beat the IMAX for size or sound.

Go to the IMAX!

Magicjack does it again!

January 9th, 2010

Magicjack introduced a new device at the CES (Consumer Electronic Show) in Las Vegas. It apparently allows you to make free cell phone calls from within your home tapping into the radio spectrum that your GSM cellphone uses. This is done without the permission of the GSM carrier and is based on the fact that the government regulations which govern the purchase of the radio spectrum do not apply with in the home.

We purchased a Magicjack unit about 16 months ago and are quite happy with it. I was spending about $24.00 a month for my land line and if you do the math that would be about $384 over the last 16 months. Now because of Magicjack I spend approximately $20.00 a year!

Is it a perfect solution..no. I will occasionally have a problem with a call just like I did with my land line and my cell phone for that matter. But, it has been well worth the investment and remember Magicjack costs me $20.00/year versus my ATT land line which was $288/year…you do the math.

I rank this as a “Green Technology” because of the cash it saves.

Buy-Fix-Sell Properties Inc. to be interviewed by the Mercury News

January 8th, 2010

Buy-Fix-Sell Properties was contacted by the Mercury News as part of a series on small business and they want to interview us. It seems the paper is doing a story on how the recession is affecting small businesses; the individuals who are the bread and butter of the American economy, something politicians often forget when they court big businesses whose wall street ups and downs comprise the better part of the mornings news. After all of the questions are asked and answered, I think we will be leaning toward doing the piece. The introspection and probing questions, which will obviously be part of the piece although never fun are always good for the soul.

Doug and I built this company on the mantra that doing more with less is the right, sound and prudent thing to do when dealing with what remains the biggest portion of the individual American’s wealth — real estate. We picked up challenged properties and remodeled them, within reason, basing every decision on neighborhood values as well as how and who was going to use the house. It was our strong desire to integrate energy efficient and green technologies and we were able to do it with many clients.

As home renovation project managers we work with honest people, such as Peter Redmond, of Century 21 and we show all of our cards to our Clients, in a game where playing it close to the vest is not only common it is Standard Operation Procedure.. If doing the interview allows us to mention our support for use of zero VOC paints in the home, energy efficient technologies and green innovations and one person integrates it into his renovation, we have done a good days work. And at the end of the day feeling good about what you do is the most important thing there is and we sleep better.
